rookery は rook「ミヤマガラス」に、場所を表す -ery が付いた語です。rook は古英語 hroc 由来のゲルマン系語で、「カラスの一種」が原義なので、もともとは「ミヤマガラスの営巣地」という意味でした。基体の rook やオランダ語 roek も同系で、そこから鳥やアザラシの繁殖地全般を指すようになりました。
Rookery is formed from rook and the suffix -ery, which often names a place connected with something. Rook comes from Old English hroc, a Germanic word for the bird. So the word first meant a place where rooks nest. Later it widened to mean breeding places of other animals too. Related forms appear in Dutch roek and the English base word rook.
