geum は植物学の学名 Geum から入った語で、その学名はラテン語 gaeum / geum（プリニウスの記す植物名）にさかのぼります。さらに奥の起源は不詳ですが、古い植物名がそのまま属名になった語で、Geum urbanum や geums に同じ形が残ります。
Geum comes from the botanical Latin genus name Geum. That name goes back to Latin geum or gaeum, an old plant name recorded by Pliny. Its deeper origin is uncertain, but the ancient plant name was later reused as the modern scientific genus name.
