チェス用語の rook は古フランス語 roc、中世ラテン語 roccus を経て入り、さらにペルシア語系の語にさかのぼるとされます。鳥名 rook や動詞 rook とは別由来です。
The chess word rook came into English through Old French roc and Medieval Latin roccus. It is thought to go back to a Persian form used in the history of chess. This rook is different in origin from the bird name rook and the verb rook.
