rubbish は中英語 robous からで、アングロ・フランス語 rubouses に由来します。語源自体は不詳ですが rubble と近縁とされ、壊れた石や建材のくずが出発点です。そこから「役に立たない物」全般、つまりゴミの意味へ広がりました。
Rubbish appeared in Middle English in forms such as robous and is associated with Anglo-French forms referring to broken material or debris. Its deeper origin is uncertain, so a more exact derivation should be treated cautiously. It has often been linked with rubble because both words referred to fragments of stone or building material.
