gamutは中世ラテン語gamma utに由来し、音階の最初の音名を表した語で、gamma-rayのgammaと同じギリシャ語由来です。そこから「音域の端から端まで」の感覚が生まれ、run the gamutは「全範囲をくまなく経験する」になりました。
Gamut comes from Medieval Latin gamma ut, the name of the lowest note in an early musical scale. Gamma is the Greek letter also seen in gamma ray. Because gamut first referred to the full musical range from one end to the other, run the gamut later came to mean covering or experiencing the whole range of something.
