scout の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 auscultare（耳を傾ける・聞く）から古フランス語 escouter（聴く）を経て英語に。原義は「こっそり聞く偵察者」。auscultation（聴診）も同根。敵情を探るために耳を澄ます人が、やがて有望な人材を探す意味にも広がった。
Scout entered English through Old French escoute, associated with escouter, “to listen,” ultimately from Latin auscultare, “to listen attentively.” It first referred to a person sent out to observe or gather information, especially about an enemy. The occupational sense later broadened to someone who watches for promising talent in sports or entertainment. Auscultation, the medical act of listening to sounds within the body, comes from the same Latin source and preserves the original listening sense.
