scout の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 auscultare（耳を傾ける・聞く）から古フランス語 escouter（聴く）を経て英語に。原義は「こっそり聞く偵察者」。auscultation（聴診）も同根。敵情を探るために耳を澄ます人が、やがて有望な人材を探す意味にも広がった。
