scouting は scout からできた名詞で、古フランス語 escouter「耳を澄ます」がラテン語 auscultare「注意して聞く」にさかのぼります。もとは「よく聞いて探る」感覚なので、そこから「偵察」になったと考えると自然で、関連語に auscultate, auscultation があります。
Scouting comes from scout, which is thought to come through Old French escouter, "to listen," from Latin auscultare, "to listen carefully." The early idea was paying close attention in order to detect or discover something. From that, it developed into the sense of searching, observing, or gathering information, and related words include auscultate and auscultation.
