screeching は screech「キーッと鋭く鳴く・きしる」に名詞化の -ing が付いた形で、screech は中英語 scrichen にさかのぼる擬音語です。耳を刺す高い音をそのまま写した語なので「きしむ音」が腑に落ち、近い語に shriek, scream があります。
Screeching is the noun form of screech, made with the suffix -ing. Screech goes back to Middle English scrichen and is probably imitative in origin, copying a harsh, high sound.
