使い方 Usage
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
scribble「走り書きする・落書きする」の語末の e を落として -ing を付けます。ペンを雑に動かして残った文字や線を、丁寧な筆跡や完成した絵と対比して覚えましょう。
Drop the final silent e in scribble before adding -ing. Picture messy words and lines left by hurried pen movements, and contrast them with neat handwriting or a finished drawing.
例文
The notebook was full of scribbling in blue ink.
そのノートは青いインクの落書きでいっぱいでした。
I could not read the scribbling on the back of the card.
カードの裏の走り書きは読めませんでした。

scribbling の語源・成り立ち Etymology
scribbling は scribble+-ing で、核はラテン語 scribere「書く」にさかのぼります。英語の -ble が小刻みで雑な反復感を添え、「ちょこちょこ書く」から「書きなぐり・落書き」に。関連語は script, describe。
Scribbling is formed from scribble by dropping the final silent e and adding -ing. Scribble entered English in the Middle English period and is related through French or medieval Latin forms to Latin scribere, “to write.” Its development gave the idea of writing hastily or carelessly rather than producing polished text. The same Latin source also lies behind familiar words such as script, describe, and inscription.
