legible「読める」を知っていれば、先頭に否定の il- が付いた illegible はそのまま「読めない」と捉えやすいです。意味は broad な unreadable よりも、特に字・印刷・筆跡がつぶれて判読しづらい感じに寄ります。doctor's handwriting is illegible, the signature is illegible のように、文字そのものが読めない場面で覚えると定着します。eligible と形が少し似ていますが、そちらは「資格がある」で別語なので混同注意。
If `legible` means readable, then `il-` makes `illegible` its opposite. It is especially useful for handwriting, signatures, or print that you cannot make out clearly. Be careful not to confuse it with `eligible`, which looks similar but has a completely different meaning.

ラテン語 illegibilis に由来し、il-「否定」+ leg(ere)「読む」+ -ible「〜できる」から成ります。legible や lecture と同じ語根で、直訳すると「読めない」なので、文字が判読不能という意味になります。
Illegible comes from Latin roots: il- meaning "not," legere meaning "to read," and -ible meaning "able to be." It is closely related to legible, and more distantly to words like lecture, which come from the same reading root.
