結晶の構造や性質を研究する科学の一分野。X線回折などの技術を使用して原子配置を分析する。
Crystallography is the scientific study of crystals and the arrangement of atoms inside solid materials. It is used in chemistry, physics, and biology to understand the structure of minerals, metals, and even proteins.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず crystal が見えれば「結晶の話」だと当たりを付ける。後半の -graphy は geography, biography などと同じで、「ある対象を体系的に記述・研究する分野」という形で覚えると定着しやすい。つまり crystallography は「結晶を詳しく調べて構造を読み解く学問」。特に X-ray crystallography という言い方が非常に頻出。単なる鉱物名や crystal clear の比喩ではなく、原子配列まで扱う専門語だと押さえる。

crystallography は crystal＋-graphy。crystal はギリシャ語 krystallos「氷」由来、-graphy は「書く・記す」で、もとは結晶の形や構造を記述する学問という発想です。関連語は crystallize、biography。
Crystallography is built from crystal and -graphy. Crystal comes from Greek krystallos, which originally meant "ice," because clear quartz was once thought to be a kind of frozen ice; -graphy comes from Greek graphein, "to write" or "record."
