近い距離のものはよく見えるが、遠い距離のものが見えにくい視覚の状態です。眼鏡やコンタクトレンズで矯正することができます。
Shortsighted means unable to see distant things clearly. It can also describe thinking that only considers immediate results and ignores future problems; for the vision meaning, nearsighted is more common in American English.

short＋sight(ed) で『見える距離が short＝短い』と捉えると定着しやすい語です。short は“短い”、sight は“視力・視界”、-ed は“その性質をもつ”くらいに見れば十分。つまり『遠くまで視線が届かず、近くは見える』状態。反対語の farsighted とセットで置くと混同しにくくなります。さらに shortsighted は比喩で『先を見通せない、近視眼的な』にもなるので、目でも判断でも“視野が短い”という共通イメージで覚えると残りやすいです。
