A repairman is a man whose job is to fix broken machines, equipment, or systems. He is commonly called when something at home, in an office, or in a building stops working properly. In modern use, people also often say "repair technician" to sound more neutral.

repairman はまず repair「修理する」が見えていればかなり意味が取れます。語尾の man は fisherman や salesman と同じく「その仕事をする人」なので、直訳気味に「repair する人」→「修理工」と覚えるのが最短です。使う場面では call a repairman のように、家電・機械・配管などを直しに来る職人を思い浮かべると定着します。なお fix は日常的な「直す」、repair はやや仕事・作業感があり、職業名としては technician や repair person と言い換えられることもあります。

repairmanはrepair＋manの複合語です。repairは古フランス語reparer、さらにラテン語re-「再び」＋parare「整える・準備する」にさかのぼり、manは古英語mann。文字どおり「もう一度整える人」で、prepareも同じparare系です。
Repairman is a compound of repair and man. Repair came into English through Old French reparer, from Latin re- "again" + parare "make ready, put in order," while man comes from Old English mann.
