mineralogy は mineral + -logy と見れば覚えやすい。-logy は biology, geology と同じ「〜学」なので、まず「鉱物を扱う学問」と取る。geology が地球や岩石全体を見るのに対し、mineralogy はその中でも鉱物そのものの種類、結晶構造、化学成分にぐっと寄った分野。mineral water の mineral を起点にしつつ、metallurgy が金属の精錬寄りなのとは違う、と並べると混同しにくい。
Break it into `mineral + -logy`. The ending `-logy` means "the study of," as in `biology` or `geology`, so the pattern is easy to remember. If you already know `mineral water`, use `mineral` as your anchor and just add the academic ending.
