シラーズ
解説 Definition
Shiraz は、イラン南西部の都市シラーズ、またはシラーズ種のぶどうから作られる赤ワインを指します。固有名詞として地名を表す場合は Shiraz と大文字で書かれるのが普通です。
Shiraz is a historic city in southwestern Iran. In wine terminology, Shiraz is also a name, especially common in Australia, for the Syrah grape variety and the red wine produced from it.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
Shiraz はまずイラン南西部の都市シラーズを表す固有名詞で、地図、旅行、歴史的庭園の話では大文字にします。一方、ワインの文脈では Syrah と同じ黒ぶどう品種やその赤ワインを指す名称です。about Shiraz なら都市、a bottle of Shiraz ならワイン、と周囲の語で判別しましょう。
Use the surrounding words to choose between the two meanings. A map of Shiraz, a trip to Shiraz, or the gardens of Shiraz points to the Iranian city and requires a capital letter. A bottle of Shiraz or Australian Shiraz points to red wine made from the grape also called Syrah. Keeping these two typical settings separate is more reliable than assuming that every use refers to the same object. The city is famous for Persian cultural history, while the wine term is particularly established in Australian and other English-language labeling.

shiraz の語源・成り立ち Etymology
都市名 Shiraz はペルシャ語 Shīrāz から英語に入った名称で、それ以前の語源は不確かです。ワイン用語では Shiraz は Syrah と同じぶどう品種の名称として、特にオーストラリアで定着しました。ワイン名をイランの都市シラーズと直接結び付ける説は広く知られていますが、その名称成立の経緯は確定していません。
The city name Shiraz is borrowed from Persian Shīrāz and has a long history as the name of the Iranian city. Its more remote origin is uncertain. In modern wine terminology, Shiraz is the name used especially in Australia for the grape otherwise known as Syrah and for wine made from it. Historical stories connecting that grape directly with the Iranian city are popular, but the name’s development in wine usage does not securely establish such an origin.
