sicilianはSicily「シチリア」に -an「〜の人」を付けた語で、地名はラテン語Sicilia、さらにギリシャ語Sikeliaにさかのぼります。SicilyやSiculo-と同根で、古代の住民名に由来するため、「島名が先」というより「その民に連なる人」という感覚が見えます。
Sicilian comes from Sicily with the suffix -an, meaning "a person from." The place name goes back through Latin Sicilia to Greek Sikelia, which was connected with an ancient people of the island. So the word originally meant someone belonging to the people or land of Sicily.
