序文とは、書籍や論文の最初に置かれる導入的な文章です。著者または編集者が読者に作品の背景、目的、または重要な情報を説明します。
A foreword is a short introduction at the beginning of a book, usually written by someone other than the main author. It gives background, support, or context for the book and is separate from the main text.

foreword は fore-「前に」と word「ことば」で、本文の前に置かれる文章だと押さえると定着しやすいです。forehead, forecast, foresee などの fore- も「前」を示すので同じ感覚で覚えられます。本の最初にある短い案内文で、著者本人以外が書くことも多いのがポイント。つづりは forward ではなく foreword。意味は「前にある言葉」、使う場面は read/write the foreword が典型です。
