本の巻頭に載せられる挿絵やイラストのこと。タイトルページの対向に置かれることが多い。
A frontispiece is a picture or special illustrated page at the front of a book, often opposite the title page. It is used mainly in publishing, art, and older books.

frontispieceはフランス語 frontispice を経て、ラテン語 frons「前面」と specere「見る」由来の frontispicium にさかのぼります。見た目は front＋piece ですが本来は「正面に見えるもの」で、本の冒頭の口絵という意味に育ちました。関連語は front, inspect。
Frontispiece came into English through French frontispice, from Latin frontispicium. Its roots are frons, meaning "front," and specere, meaning "to look," also seen in words like inspect and spectacle. Although it looks like front + piece today, its older sense was "what is seen at the front," which later became the picture or decorated page at the beginning of a book.
