paperweight は paper「紙」+ weight「重し」。paper はラテン語 papyrus を経た古フランス語 papier、weight は古英語 gewiht に由来し、papyrus や weigh も縁語です。直訳すれば「紙を重みで押さえる物」で、机上の機能がそのまま名前になった語です。
