フランス語 morgue が語源で、さらに morguer は「じろりと見る」にさかのぼる。関連語にはフランス語 morguer があり、新しい囚人や遺体を顔つきで見分ける場所だったため、「にらむ」が「遺体安置所」へ転じた。
Morgue comes from French morgue, from morguer, meaning "to stare at" or "look at closely."
