ラテン語 sinus「曲がり・ひだ・入り江・ふところ」がそのまま入った単純語です。sine や insinuate と同じく「内へ曲がり込む」感覚をもち、sinus が副鼻腔のような湾曲した空洞を指すのは、体内の“入り江”を思えば腑に落ちます。
