解説 Definition
sketchbook は絵や下描きを描くための紙をまとめた冊子、つまりスケッチブックという意味です。日本語の「スケッチブック」とほぼ同じですが、英語では一冊の道具として数えられます。

sketchbookはsketch＋bookの複合語です。sketchはオランダ語schets、さらにイタリア語schizzo「さっと描いた下絵」に由来し、bookは古英語bōcなので、「下絵をためる本」だと語の形から納得できます。関連語はsketch、sketchyです。
Sketchbook is a transparent compound of sketch and book. Sketch entered English through Dutch schets, ultimately from Italian schizzo, a rapid or rough drawing. Book comes from Old English bōc. The compound therefore names a book intended for preliminary or quickly made drawings. The related adjective sketchy originally described something resembling a rough sketch and later developed the broader senses “incomplete” and “unreliable.”
