noun

スケッチブック

解説 Definition

sketchbook は絵や下描きを描くための紙をまとめた冊子、つまりスケッチブックという意味です。日本語の「スケッチブック」とほぼ同じですが、英語では一冊の道具として数えられます。

A sketchbook is a book of plain paper used for making sketches, drawings, or visual studies. Artists and students often carry one to record ideas, observations, and practice work.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

sketch「素早く描く下絵」と book「本」をそのまま組み合わせた複合語なので、「下絵をためる本」と捉えます。carry a sketchbook、draw in a sketchbook のように使い、一冊なら a sketchbook、複数なら sketchbooks と数えます。

Break sketchbook into sketch and book: it is literally a book in which sketches are made and collected. Picture an artist carrying one and quickly drawing buildings, trees, or people before the scene changes. Useful patterns include “carry a sketchbook,” “draw in a sketchbook,” and “fill a sketchbook with drawings.” Unlike the broader notebook, which is commonly used for written notes, a sketchbook usually contains unlined paper intended mainly for visual work. It is countable: one sketchbook, two sketchbooks.

例文

sketchbook の語源・成り立ち Etymology

sketchbookはsketch+bookの複合語です。sketchはオランダ語schets、さらにイタリア語schizzo「さっと描いた下絵」に由来し、bookは古英語bōcなので、「下絵をためる本」だと語の形から納得できます。関連語はsketch、sketchyです。

Sketchbook is a transparent compound of sketch and book. Sketch entered English through Dutch schets, ultimately from Italian schizzo, a rapid or rough drawing. Book comes from Old English bōc. The compound therefore names a book intended for preliminary or quickly made drawings. The related adjective sketchy originally described something resembling a rough sketch and later developed the broader senses “incomplete” and “unreliable.”
