Etymology
Skirting is formed from skirt plus -ing. Skirt came into English from Old Norse skyrta, referring to a shirt or short garment, and developed senses connected with a lower edge or surrounding border. In building terminology, the strip running around the base of a wall was understood figuratively as the room’s lower edge or “skirt.” British English commonly uses skirting as a shortened form of skirting board.
