slagging は英語 slag＋-ing で、slag は古ノルド語系 slagg『精錬かす』にさかのぼるとされる。slagheap や slaggy も同系で、『人をかす扱いする』感覚がそのまま、こき下ろしや中傷の意味へ伸びた。
Slagging is built from slag and the ending -ing. Slag probably came into English from a Scandinavian source and first meant the waste left from metal smelting. In British English, the idea of treating someone like worthless waste helped the verb develop the sense of harshly criticizing or insulting.
