「広がる」を意味するspanningとは、ある空間的・時間的な範囲にわたって広がっていることを表す形容詞（または動詞spanの現在分詞）である。橋が川をまたぐ、歴史が長い年月にわたるなど、空間的・時間的な広がりを示す際に使われる表現である。
