古英語spinnan（糸を紡ぐ）に由来し、ゲルマン祖語*spinnanにさかのぼる。繊維をねじって糸にする回転動作が原義で、そこから「回転する」全般の意味に広がった。関連語：spindle（紡錘）、spider（糸を紡ぐ者→蜘蛛）。蜘蛛の名は「糸を紡ぐ生き物」という発想から。
