spink の語源・成り立ち Etymology
spink は中英語 spynke「フィンチ」にさかのぼり、おそらく北欧系の小鳥名と同じ流れの語です。そこから動詞では『その鳥のように鋭く鳴く』の意味になり、spin「回る」とは別語だと分かると覚えやすいです。関連語は bullspink, Spink。
Historical spink goes back to Middle English spynke, a name for a finch, probably related to northern European bird names. A rare verbal use developed with the sense of uttering a sharp, birdlike call. This history is separate from that of spin, the standard English verb meaning to rotate. Consequently, the rotational use of spink represented in the examples is not supported by the older etymology and is best regarded as nonstandard rather than an established development.
