手足や指などを外側へ大きく開くこと、または開いて広がることを表す動詞です。人が意図して広げる場合にも、衝撃や姿勢によって自然に扇状へ開く場合にも使われ、ばらっと開いた形や姿勢を描写するときによく用いられます。

中英語で display の古形 desplayen が短くなった語で、さらに古フランス語 desploiir、ラテン語 displicare「折りたたみをほどいて広げる」にさかのぼる。dis-「離して」+ plicare「折る」の感覚をもち、関連語は display, deploy。だから splay は『外へぱっと広がる』となる。
