squatting は squat＋動名詞・現在分詞の接尾辞 -ing。squat は古フランス語 esquatir「押しつぶす・平らにする」から来て、さらに俗ラテン語 *coactire にさかのぼります。『押し下げる』感覚が『しゃがむ』になり、関連語は squatter, cogent です。
