starred の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古英語 steorra(星)からの star に過去分詞接尾辞 -ed が付いた形。ゲルマン祖語 *sternō-、印欧祖語 *h₂stér(星)に遡る。ラテン語 stella、ギリシャ語 astēr も同根で、stellar(星の)や asterisk(星印)と親戚。「星が付けられた=注目の」という意味に発展した。
Starred is formed from star by doubling the final r and adding the participial ending -ed. Star comes from Old English steorra and ultimately from a Germanic word related to Latin stella and Greek astēr. After star also came to mean a star-shaped written symbol, the verb developed the sense “mark or rate with a star,” producing the adjective starred.
