Stemming is formed from the verb stem and the suffix -ing. Stem comes from Old English stemn or stefn and originally referred to the main trunk or stalk of a plant. The word later acquired figurative senses involving a central supporting part. In computational linguistics, the plant metaphor was applied to removing word endings so that a central form, called a stem, remains. A program performing this operation is a stemmer.
