stemming は stem「幹・茎」に -ing が付いた語です。stem は古英語 stemn/stefn にさかのぼり、植物の幹のような中心部分を指しました。そこから語尾を削って幹だけ残すという発想で、語幹処理を表します。関連語に stemmer があります。
