Stork comes from Old English storc and has cognates in other Germanic languages. A deeper connection has sometimes been proposed with words suggesting stiffness or a rigid posture, but the remote origin is not completely certain. The safest historical link is therefore the established Germanic bird name itself. The word has continued in English as the ordinary noun for birds of the family Ciconiidae, including the familiar white stork.
