解説 Definition
相手の主張を実際より弱く、極端に、またはゆがめて言い換え、その作り替えた主張を攻撃する誤った論法を指す。元の意見に正面から反論していないため、公平な議論を妨げる。批判を有利に見せるために使われがちだが、論理的には不適切である。
A strawman is a weak or false version of another person's argument that is easier to attack. This word is often used in debates or discussions when someone changes what the other person really meant instead of answering the real point.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
議論の場面で覚えると定着しやすい語です。strawman は「相手の本物の主張」ではなく、わざと弱く単純にした“攻撃しやすい版”を先に作って、それをたたくこと。まず claim があり、その後に fake version を作る流れを意識するとよいです。That’s a strawman. の形で批判に使われやすく、正面から反論している legitimate criticism とは違う、とセットで覚えると混同しません。
Picture a weak fake target made of straw. In an argument, a `strawman` is not the real point, but an easier version made so it can be attacked. That image helps you remember the logic: first change the other person's claim, then knock down the weaker copy. The common reaction is `That's a strawman.`
