サブグループ
解説 Definition
subgroups は subgroup(下位集団、サブグループ)の複数形です。大きな集団の内部で、目的や特徴ごとに分かれた複数の小集団を指します。
Subgroups are two or more smaller groups formed within a larger group, usually because their members share a particular feature, role, or purpose. The term is often used when people, data, or objects are divided for discussion, organization, analysis, or comparison.
使い方 Usage
- divide A into subgroups で「Aを複数の小集団に分ける」。授業や話し合いで集団を分ける場面に使えます。 Use divide A into subgroups to describe splitting a larger group into smaller groups, for example in a class or discussion.
- each of the subgroups は「それぞれのサブグループ」。each を主語にすると、動詞は単数扱いになります。 Each of the subgroups refers to every subgroup individually. When each is the subject, use a singular verb.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
sub-「下位の」+ group「集団」で、大集団の中の小集団をイメージしましょう。複数形は -s を付けます。group の末尾は無声音 /p/ なので、語尾の -s は /s/ と発音します。
Think of sub- as “lower” and group as a collection: smaller groups within a larger whole. Add -s for the plural. Since group ends in the voiceless sound /p/, the plural ending is pronounced /s/.
例文
The class was divided into three subgroups.
クラスは3つのサブグループに分けられました。
Each of the subgroups discussed a different topic.
それぞれのサブグループが別々のテーマについて話し合いました。
The report compares the results from several age subgroups.
その報告書は、いくつかの年齢別サブグループの結果を比較しています。

subgroups の語源・成り立ち Etymology
sub- はラテン語で「下・従属」、group はフランス語 groupe、さらにイタリア語 gruppo に由来し、「ひとかたまり」を表します。つまり subgroup は「大きな集団の下にある小集団」という成り立ちです。関連語は submarine, group。
Subgroups is the regular plural of subgroup, formed by adding -s. Subgroup combines the prefix sub-, from Latin sub, meaning “under” or “below,” with group. English group came through French groupe from Italian gruppo, a word for a cluster or knot. The compound therefore denotes a group positioned within a larger organizational or classificatory whole. The plural ending indicates that two or more of these smaller divisions are being discussed.
