サブセット
解説 Definition
subsets は subset(一部、部分集合、サブセット)の複数形です。数学やデータ分析で、全体の中に含まれる複数の小さなまとまりを指すときによく使います。
Subsets are smaller sets or groups whose members are all contained within a larger set or collection. The term is especially common in mathematics, statistics, and data analysis when information is divided into multiple selected groups.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
単数形 subset「部分集合・全体の一部」に複数語尾 -s を付けた形で、語末は /ts/ と発音します。sub-「下位の・部分の」+ set「集合」と分け、larger set の中に smaller subsets が複数入る図を思い浮かべましょう。compare three subsets や subsets of the data のように、数学・調査・データ分析で区分された複数の小集団を表します。
Begin with the singular noun subset and add -s to show that there is more than one; the ending is pronounced /s/, producing a final /ts/ sequence. Break subset into sub-, suggesting a lower or smaller division, and set, a collection of items. Visualize one large set containing several smaller circles. In mathematics every member of each subset belongs to the larger set, while in data analysis phrases such as three subsets of the survey data refer to several selected groups drawn from the whole dataset.

subsets の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語の接頭辞sub-(下)と古英語のset(置く・まとめる)に由来する。「上位集合の下に配される小集団」という空間イメージから数学・計算機用語が派生した。同じ語根のpreset(事前設定する)やsettle(定着させる)にも、「位置を整える」という根本的な意味が受け継がれている。
Subsets is the regular plural of subset, a compound of the prefix sub- and the noun set. Sub- comes from Latin and commonly indicates something under, secondary, or part of a larger whole. Set is a Germanic English word connected with putting or placing things together. The mathematical noun subset became established for a set whose elements all belong to another set.
