sub- は「下位の・部分的な」が共通イメージで、subway（地下鉄）や subset（部分集合）の sub と同じ。net / network を知っていれば、「大きな network の下位区画」と考えると覚えやすい。実際も、1つのネットワークを用途や部署ごとに分けた小区画を指すことが多い。IP アドレスと subnet mask の話でよく一緒に出るので、「範囲を区切る network の単位」と結びつけると定着しやすい。
