解説 Definition
借りている部屋・家・オフィスなどを、契約者本人ではない第三者にさらに貸すことを表す。不動産の賃貸でよく使われる語で、元の賃貸契約で許可されていない場合は規約違反になることもある。
To sublet means to rent a room, apartment, office, or other property to another person while you are still renting it from the original owner. It is commonly used in housing and business situations when someone leaves for a time but keeps the main rental agreement. The person who sublets is not usually the legal owner of the property.

sublet はラテン語系接頭辞 sub-『下で・さらに』と、古英語 let『貸す』から成り、原義は『借りた物をさらに貸す』です。subway や submarine の sub- と同じく一段下の関係を示すので、『元の借り手の下で起こる貸し借り』と考えると又貸しの意味が腑に落ちます。
