Subrogation is a legal or insurance process in which one person or company takes over another person's right to claim money or recover a loss. It often happens when an insurance company pays for damage and then seeks payment from the person responsible. This is a technical word mainly used in law and insurance.

subrogation は後期ラテン語 subrogatio に由来し、subrogare「代理に任命する」から来ます。sub-「下で・代わりに」+ rogare「正式に求める」で、他人の地位や権利に法的に入り込むので「代位」。関連語に surrogate、interrogate。
Subrogation comes from Late Latin subrogatio, from subrogare, meaning to appoint someone in place of another. The verb combines sub-, here carrying the sense of substitution, with rogare, "to ask" or "formally propose." The word kept that legal idea of one person stepping into another's place, and it is related to surrogate and interrogate through the same Latin root.
