スーダン

解説 Definition

アフリカ北東部に位置する国。首都はハルツーム。

Sudan is a country in northeastern Africa through which the Nile flows. Its official name is the Republic of the Sudan, and its name must be distinguished from that of the separate neighboring country South Sudan.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

国名なので通常は大文字で Sudan と書きます。アフリカ北東部にあり、ナイル川が流れる国という地理像と結び付けましょう。Sudanese は「スーダンの・スーダン人」。South Sudan は別の国なので、Sudan と取り違えないことが重要です。

Remember Sudan as a country name and therefore capitalize the first letter: Sudan. Place it mentally in northeastern Africa and connect it with the Nile, which flows through the country. The adjective and noun for its people are Sudanese, as in “Sudanese culture” or “a Sudanese citizen.” Be especially careful with South Sudan: despite the shared word Sudan, it is a separate neighboring country. This geographical contrast is a more reliable memory aid than treating the two names as interchangeable.

sudan の語源・成り立ち Etymology

アラビア語 bilād as-sūdān(بلاد السودان=「黒い人々の土地」)に由来する地名。sūd はアラビア語で「黒い」の複数形。サハラ以南のアフリカ一帯を指した歴史的呼称が国名となった。関連語: Sudanese(スーダン人)。

Sudan comes from Arabic bilād al-sūdān, meaning “lands of the Black people.” In this expression, bilād means “lands” or “countries,” while sūdān is historically connected with a plural form referring to Black people. Medieval Arabic writers used the expression broadly for regions south of the Sahara. Over time, a shortened form became attached more specifically to the territory represented by the modern country name Sudan.
