Sudan is a country in northeastern Africa through which the Nile flows. Its official name is the Republic of the Sudan, and its name must be distinguished from that of the separate neighboring country South Sudan.

Sudan comes from Arabic bilād al-sūdān, meaning “lands of the Black people.” In this expression, bilād means “lands” or “countries,” while sūdān is historically connected with a plural form referring to Black people.
