Summarising means giving the main points of something in a shorter form. It is used when talking about texts, speeches, meetings, or ideas. The focus is on the most important information, not every detail.

sum（合計）と summary（要約）を知っていれば、summarise は「情報を集めて、要点だけの summary にする動詞」とつながります。summarising はその -ing 形で、「要約していること・要約する作業」。長い説明、会議内容、記事の内容を短くまとめ直す場面で使う語です。explain が「詳しく述べる」、summarise が「短く要点化する」で向きが逆だと押さえると混同しにくくなります。なお綴りは英式の summarising で、米式は summarizing.
