Surrealism comes from French surréalisme, built from sur-, “above” or “beyond,” and réalisme, “realism.” The related term was used in the early twentieth century before André Breton defined and promoted Surrealism in his 1924 manifesto. The name expressed an aim to reach a reality beyond ordinary rational perception, especially through dreams, automatic creation, and the unconscious. English adopted the French-derived term for the movement and its methods.
