Tagalog is an Austronesian language spoken mainly in and around central and southern Luzon in the Philippines. It is the principal basis of Filipino, the country’s national language, and is used by millions as a first or additional language.

Tagalog comes from a Philippine expression commonly represented as tagá-ilog: tagá means “a person from” or “native of,” while ilog means “river.” The compound therefore identified people living by or originating from the river. English borrowed Tagalog as both an ethnolinguistic label and, most commonly in general usage, the name of the language that became the main basis of Filipino.
