16世紀スペイン王フェリペ2世（Felipe II）にちなみ、スペイン領フィリピン諸島を「Las Islas Filipinas」と命名したことに由来。Felipe はギリシャ語 philippos（philos「愛する」+ hippos「馬」）が起源で「馬を愛する者」の意。関連語: Philip, Philadelphia。
Filipino ultimately comes from the name Felipe, the Spanish form of Philip. The Philippines were named Las Islas Filipinas in the 16th century after King Philip II of Spain, and Filipino later became the word for the people and language. Felipe itself goes back to Greek Philippos, meaning "lover of horses," from philos "loving" and hippos "horse." Related words include Philip and Philadelphia.
