tapas はスペイン語 tapa の複数形で、tapa は「ふた・覆い」を意味し、俗ラテン語 tappa を経てゲルマン系語に由来するとされます。もとは酒杯に小皿を「ふた」のように載せたことから、その上のつまみ自体が tapas と呼ばれるようになりました。関連語は tapar, tapón。
