温暖な地域に生息する大型のクモの一種。長い毛で覆われた大きな体を持ち、毒を持つことがあるが、人間に対しては通常危険ではない。
A tarantula is a very large, hairy spider. The word is mainly used when talking about animals, especially exotic species, and although tarantulas may look dangerous, many kinds are not highly harmful to humans.

tarantula は南イタリアの地名 Taranto に由来し、もとは「タラントのクモ」という呼び名でした。毒で人が踊り狂うという中世の俗信が tarantella も生み、土地名がそのまま怪しいクモの名になりました。関連語は Taranto、tarantella です。
Tarantula comes from Taranto, a city in southern Italy. It originally meant "the spider from Taranto." In the Middle Ages, people believed its bite caused wild dancing, and that story also gave rise to tarantella. So a place name became the name of a famous spider.
