支点とは、てこなどの工具が回転する際の中心となる固定点のことです。力を効率的に活用するための基準点となり、機械的な利点を生み出します。
A fulcrum is the fixed point on which a lever turns or balances. It is mainly used in physics and mechanics when talking about force and movement. The word can also be used more generally for a central point of support or change.

まず lever（てこ）とセットで覚える。fulcrum は『力をかける場所』ではなく、てこがその一点を中心に回る pivot point。押す側の end、持ち上がる側の end と区別して、真ん中の支えが fulcrum。物理の図で三角の支えの上に棒が乗っている場面を思い浮かべると定着しやすい。比喩でも the fulcrum of the debate のように『全体がそこを軸に動く中心点』へ広がるが、pivot より『支えになって回転を生む点』という機械的ニュアンスが強い。

「fulcrum」はラテン語 fulcrum「支え」に由来し、核には fulcire「支える」がある。てこが一点に力を預けるため「支点」を表すようになり、意味は形そのもの。fulcrate や fulcral も同じ fulc- を受け継ぐ。
Fulcrum comes from Latin fulcrum, meaning "support," from the verb fulcire, "to support." In mechanics, it became the name for the point that supports a lever while it moves. The meaning stayed very close to the original idea of something that holds up or props up.
