覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
untied は tie「結ぶ」が見えていれば覚えやすい語です。まず tie a shoelace の tie を芯に置き、先頭の un- を「結びが外れる方向」と読むと意味が立ち上がります。not tied と静的に覚えるより、「結んであったものがほどけた結果の状態」を映像で持つのがコツ。loose も近いですが、untied は靴ひも・ロープ・帯など“結んでいた物”に特に自然です。shoelaces came untied で覚えると使い方まで定着します。つづりは united と混同しやすいので注意。
See the base word `tie`, as in `tie your shoelaces`. Add `un-` and imagine something that was tied before but has now come loose. A very helpful phrase is `my shoelaces came untied`, and be careful not to confuse the spelling with `united`.

untied は un-「ほどけた・外れた」と tied から成り、tie は古ノルド語系の「縄・結ぶ」語にさかのぼるゲルマン系の語である。tie や untie と同じ核を持ち、「結び目の力が外れた」と考えると、単に「結ばれていない」より動きのある語だとわかる。
Untied is made from un- and tied. Tie is a Germanic word, probably influenced by Old Norse forms meaning to bind with a cord or knot. So untied keeps the image of a knot or fastening being loosened or released, rather than simply never having been tied at all.
