Untidy means not neat, clean, or well organized. It can describe a room, appearance, piece of work, or general way of doing things. It is a common everyday word.

まず tidy「きちんとした」を核に置き、un- が付くと逆になる形で覚えると定着しやすい。untidy room, untidy desk, untidy hair のように、部屋・机・髪など見た目の乱れによく使う。人なら untidy appearance で「身なりがだらしない」。clean の反対ではない点が重要で、汚れていなくても片づいていなければ untidy。messy に近いが、untidy は「整っていない」感じを素直に言う語で、disorganized ほど抽象的ではない。
Start with `tidy`, then add `un-` to flip it. `Untidy` is common with visible things like `an untidy room`, `untidy hair`, or `an untidy desk`. It does not always mean dirty; something can be clean but still untidy. That makes it easy to separate from `dirty` or even from `messy`.

untidy は un-「〜でない」+ tidy で、tidy は古英語 tid「時・頃」にさかのぼり、もとは「時宜にかなった」が原義です。そこから「整った」へ意味が伸びたので、untidy は“本来の場所や頃に収まっていない”感じで、tidings と同じ語根です。
Untidy is formed from un- "not" and tidy. Tidy is linked to an older English word from Old English tid, meaning "time" or "season," and it first had the sense of being timely or suitable.
