語源は諸説あるが、オランダ語 tarpoen またはカリブ海先住民の言語に由来するとされる。大西洋沿岸に生息する大型回遊魚で、銀色の鱗が特徴。スペイン語圏では sábalo とも呼ばれ、固有の地域名が英語に定着した例である。
