「toon」は「cartoon」の短縮形で、米国アニメ業界で生まれました。語源はイタリア語のcartone（厚紙）を経てラテン語のcharta（紙）に遡り、下描きに紙を用いた名残から「絵」を指すようになりました。音の響きで親しまれ現在も使われ、cartoonが関連語です。
Toon is a shortened form of cartoon, created by dropping the first syllable and retaining its stressed final sound. This clipped spelling became especially familiar through American animation and entertainment usage. Cartoon entered English from Italian cartone, “large or heavy paper,” through French. It first referred to a full-size preparatory drawing made on paper and later developed the senses of a humorous drawing and an animated film. Toon subsequently came to denote cartoon-style characters and works informally.
